Created in 1792 after the American Revolution, the Town of Riverhead was originally called River Head. The town, which gets its name from its location at the mouth of the Peconic River, is one of ten town in Suffolk County. Located on the north shore of Long Island, the town is approximately 76 miles from New York City. With a population of 33,506 as of the 2010 census, Riverhead is comprised of 201.27 square miles including land and water.
To the north of the town lies the Long Island Sound, to the east is the Town of Southold, to the south is the Town of Southampton and to the west is the Town of Brookhaven. Part of the town is located on the north fork of Suffolk County.
The Town of Riverhead is comprised of 9 unincorporated hamlets including Aquebogue, Baiting Hollow, part of Calverton, Jamesport, part of Laurel, part of Manorville, Northville, Riverhead, and part of Brookhaven.
Although most of Suffolk County government offices are located in Hauppauge, the Town of Riverhead is still considered the county seat of Suffolk. Within the town lies the hamlet of Riverhead which is the town’s economic hub.
The Long Island Expressway is the major roadway into the Town of Riverhead. Bus service is provided by Suffolk County Transit and Hampton Jitney Bus. Calverton Executive Airpark is a small private-use airport in the town.
The National Register of Historic Places lists several places of interest in the Town of Riverhead, among them the Jamesport Meeting House, Hallock Homestead, Riverhead Main Street Historic District, Van-Leavitt Music Hall, Wading River Radio Station and the Benjamin King Woodhull House.
Area attractions include the Long Island Aquarium, Polish Town USA, the LI Railroad Museum, Tanger Outlets, and Riverhead Raceway.
