The Town of Brookhaven has the distinction of being the only town in Suffolk County that stretches from Long Island’s north shore to its south shore, encompassing an area of 531.54 square miles including land and water, making it the largest of New York State’s 932 towns. One of ten towns in the county, the Town of Brookhaven is also the most populous, with 486,040 people as of the 2010 census. It is located about 50 miles from Manhattan in central Suffolk County with the Long Island Sound to its north, the Atlantic Ocean to its south, the Towns of Smithtown and Islip to its west and the Towns of Riverhead and Southampton to its east.
During its early years, several communities in the Town of Brookhaven prospered as shipbuilding ports, including the villages of Port Jefferson and Patchogue. Today, these villages offer the town’s busiest downtowns.
There are eight incorporated villages in the Town of Brookhaven and approximately 50 hamlets. Among the villages are Lake Grove, Patchogue, Port Jefferson and Shoreham.
The Long Island Expressway, Sunrise Highway, and various state and county roads are the major routes in and through the town. There are three airports located in the south shore communities. The LIRR and the Suffolk County Transit offer rail and bus options. The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry takes passengers and vehicles across the Long Island Sound into Connecticut.
The Town of Brookhaven is home to the Brookhaven National Laboratory, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, which focuses on research in the fields of nuclear physics, energy, data, etc. and has, over the years, garnered seven Nobel prizes. Another of the town’s most renowned institutions is Stony Brook University, one of the country’s top public universities and research facilities. The university is the top employer in the town, followed by the Internal Revenue Service in Holtsville, the Sachem School District, Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, and three area hospitals.
Some of the area attractions in the Town of Brookhaven include Splish Splash Water Park in Calverton, Stony Brook Village Center, William Floyd Estate in Mastic Beach, Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, the Old Field Point Lighthouse, Smith Point County Park and Port Jefferson Village.
