Located in the northwest section of Nassau County on Long Island, the Town of North Hempstead is one of three towns in the county. The town’s population as of the 2010 census was 226,322, all residing within the town’s approximately 69 square miles.

Originally part of the Town of Hempstead, the northern part of the town eventually broke away to become a separate township, today made of up 30 incorporated villages, and several unincorporated areas. It’s the only town on Long Island without a corresponding hamlet or village with the same name. Among the 30 incorporated villages are Great Neck, Lake Success, Mineola, New Hyde Park, Port Washington North, Roslyn, and Westbury.

The Town of North Hempstead’s western neighbor is the County of Queens, one of the five boroughs of New York City. To the east is the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County. The Long Island Sound is to the north and the Town of Hempstead to the south.

Of distinction, the largest Long Island employer, Northwell Health in Great Neck, is located in the Town of North Hempstead. One of Long Island’s most famous shopping malls, the Americana Manhasset along the “Miracle Mile” in Manhasset is also located in the Town of North Hempstead. Other top employers include Winthrop-University Hospital, Parker Jewish Institute and Pro Health.
