Yaphank is a hamlet located in the Town of Brookhaven on Long Island. As of 2019, this suburban-rural community in central Suffolk County had 6,338 residents living within its 13.8 square miles. The Long Island Expressway runs east/west through the southern portion of Yaphank.

Originally a mill town in the late 1800’s, Yaphank eventually had two lumber mills, two grist mills, two blacksmih shops, and a general store. Today, the general store remains.

Yaphank was the home of Camp Upton, a boot camp in 1917 which later became the Atomic Energy Commission. Today it’s home to the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Among the 30,000 men who received their basic training at Camp Upton was the songwriter Irving Berlin who wrote “God Bless America.”

Several county facilities inclding the police department, the fire academy and the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center, part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension program, are located in Yaphank.
